Summary of "A Change of Heart"

Jeremy Rifkin, the President of the Foundation on Economic Trends in Washington D.C., in his article, "A Change of Heart About Animals," argues about the fact animals should be guaranteed similar rights as humans. Rifkin supports his argument by describing how similar animals are to humans and by illustrating his evidence through providing many examples of personification within animals. Basically, Rifkin's purpose is to make his audience become aware of animal cruelty within our society in order to bring change in the treatment of animals. Rifkin highly establishes a very caring and respectful tone with his audience of both animal lovers and average Americans. I believe that animals should be treated better.

  1. I do think that animals should be given rights similar to humans because they are not treated as fairly as they should. Even animals performing at the circus is an issue for me because I see them being humiliated and left in a cage with minimal interaction. I do not consider these creatures as human but laws should change that give these animals more of a voice. Just because they cannot speak does not mean they cannot feel or hear.

  2. Yes I believe that animal should be treated better but not because they are like humans but because it is simply the right thing to do. I know that sounds like a pipe dream in the society we live in, but it is also extremely basic. Human rights for animals shouldn't be the answer because they are so carefully designed for humans. If we want to respect animals we must start by acknowledging that they are different from us yet still important. Once we can care about and respect something that isn't one of us, then there will be real rights.

  3. I feel like animals shouldn't really need to be given rights, because people should already treat them fairly. They should know that an animal can feel pain and have emotions like humans do. What they should do is stop and think would i want someone to do what im doing to this animal to me.
