Taxing Unhealthy Food
I
did my research project on whether or not we should tax unhealthy food to help
better people's health. What I learned through reading all five of my articles
is that it can do one of two things. It
can make people start buying healthier food or it can make people start taking
out more money from their wallets to pay for the Ding Dongs, Twinkies, ice
cream, and soda that is in their shopping cart.
Even though there are a lot of people who have health problems are on the
verge of having health problems it is hard for them to change their eating
habits. People see the unhealthy food
sitting on the shelves and they pick it up and pay for it no matter the price
because it's just ohh so good. Another
reason they will still buy the food is because its convenient and because they
just don't have time to go home and prepare a healthy meal. So it's easier for them to just buy a box hot
pockets or taquitos and go home and cook them super fast. However, if people are tight with money then
maybe they will stop buying the unhealthy foods when they see the price of a 2
liter soda went from two dollars to three dollars and fifty cents. Then instead
hopefully they'll go and buy something healthier like some tea or water. I know I would if I saw the price changed
that much it would make me not want to buy the soda and go looking throughout
the store to see if there is something better to drink that doesn't cost as
much money as the soda.

Businesses do not care about people's health as much as their own. They will only regulate once they find themselves affected. As people continue to prosper by buying their product and be exposed to chronic diseases such as heart disease and obesity, with a wide time gap between the time of purchase and the time of ailment, then the product and business will be forgotten and rarely blamed. It would be interesting to find out the ratio of lawsuits filed on food industries and the lawsuits filed on murderers. Both have committed similar crimes. It's just that one of them has been payed to continue.
ReplyDelete,I truthfully think that the taxing of unhealthy foods and subsidizing unhealthy foods is a great idea. For a fact I believe it would decrease obesity and cause more appreciation of sweets but the funny thing is those who can afford unhealthy foods will be fat. I do agree with Bianca when about these good companies. In other words it's obvious food companies main goal is to make profit but they're doing this at the expense of our health. I think these regulatory commissions should emphasize their standards and our government should focus more into the health of the people.
ReplyDeleteHonestly i have mix feeling about this subject, i mean i would like to see these products be taxed ,but I'm also a consumer of these products . I am the cheap person so now that i think about it , i really don't want to pay extra for a small pack of Oreo , but i wont buy them so the tax would be doing it purpose.
