Insects as food?

So i ate a grasshopper this past week. Check out my Instagram profile ( @thomas_nish ) if you want to see me do it. Surprisingly, it tasted fine. I would actually prefer to eat a bag of grasshoppers than a bag of chips. It was crispy, flavorful and downright edible. And yet, there still lingers within pretty much all of us a mental block. We just can't bring ourselves to think of eating these creatures. We've been conditioned (however unintentional) into thinking that bugs are repulsive on the dinner table. But if we are to believe our readings, human population and affluency cannot continue to both grow if we continue in our present dietary habits. To get a sufficient amount of protein in the future from animals, we need to start looking beyond the 4 main sources of protein in the US: beef, poultry, pork and fish.
I know it probably won't become mainstream for a while, but we as a society need to start branching out if we are to maintain a stable earth system. And this may include eating good ole Jiminy Cricket.

  1. I have actually been contemplating on trying to eat insects just to see how it taste since our processed food already contains insects, but like you said its hard to get around the thought of us actually eating insects; bugs that we try to avoid on a daily basis.

  2. Well first let me start off by saying, EWWWWW!!!! gross but I do have to give you props for doing what you did. It takes guts because I know I could never bring myself to do that. The thought of eating an insect grosses me out, exactly because of what you mentioned. We have grown up to see insects as just little bugs that get in our way or creep as out to the point of almost having a heart attack. However that video we saw last week in class opened my mind. People in other countries eat them like lollipops(some even on them). If they can do it why can’t we? Ultimately it comes down to the person. As for me, I don’t see myself eating an insect, on purpose that is, anytime soon.

  3. Never in a million years would I ever think of eating an insect. To me it just seems gross and the thought of it crunching in my mouth makes me want to vomit. I can't wrap around my head how someone can catch an insect and just cook it. But seeing that people all across the world eat them like they eat candy or chips makes me wonder how they taste or wonder why they do it. Since I don't know I'm just not going to say anything about how gross that is to their face. I'll just keep my comments about how that's gross.
