Not Going to College is a Viable Option
To everyone who is reading that title you maybe thinking its late and, Nathan has lost his mind tonight. Let me assure you I do plan on attending college and achieving a bachelors degree in Psychology, but that's not the point. The reality of it all was brought to light in a article that Ms.Fletcher has bought to all of ERW's attention. Lawrence Schlack discusses how in the world today college has almost become mandatory, and it seems he is almost encouraging us to rethink that whole idea. Now he doesn't say, "Dont got college your wasting your time", but simply states find something that you know you can do. Only about twelve percent of colleges in the United States require a Bachelors Degree. If you know that what you realistically want to do in life you don't have to take the college route. By the end of high school even the seniors that already have their mindsets do not know what they want to major in or pursue a career in. Schlack talks about this "gap year" which is very common in Europe, and it's a year to just think about whats best for you away from school. All throughout high school we've been rushed to hurry up and get things done, so this doesn't seem like a bad idea in theory. If you ever thought about not going to college think about what your good at, and choose something that you love. You don't have to follow the trend, but it also doesn't hurt to have a degree to fall back on.

I do admit that this post was really late, but hey, you just gave us an example of the Dangerous Method by Peter Elbow. Lol. Well, your article is well written and I agree that we, C/o 2014, have been rushed on and on throughout our whole school year. What I believe is that if you set your mind to it, and keep your faith, anything is possible. Most seniors develop start to get lazy in the middle of the year and develop "SENIOR-ITIS" But it is up to us to push Mr. senior-itis out of the window. Although I do recommend going to college you don't have to go to college to fulfill every career. Maybe you want to go to the navy, marines, or airforce. What I am trying to say is that there are plenty of careers out there that do not require college, and some of them get paid WAY MORE than people that get their Bachelor's Degree. Just pursue what you want, not what anyone else wants. It is your life. Like I said, stay strong in faith and keep your head high, and you'll go sooo far!! Stay strong! Nice article Nathan! I can totally relate to it.
ReplyDeleteIf you are someone who is determined to accomplish a goal or get a career, you are going to push yourself and learn along the way until you get there. If you are someone who is just digging around aimlessly in a major that isn't that important to you, you are not going to be successful regardless of what degree you have. The college route is beneficiary to everyone however this doesn't mean that the "real world" route is not.
